Energy storage for households in Europe and the United States is developing rapidly

2023-02-22

Under the "double carbon" goal, new energy represented by photovoltaic ushered in rapid growth under favorable policies. With the maturity of energy storage technology and the decrease of cost, the home scene has gradually grown into an important field of new energy application.

On the demand side, rising electricity prices have led to a surge in demand for household storage. Since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, European countries have been Mired in inflation and energy crisis, and prices of energy continue to rise. Gas supplies continue to be tight, leading to rising electricity prices. This greatly stimulated the application of photovoltaic power generation in the home scene, and the explosion of household energy storage.

On the other hand, the poor stability of power supply stimulates the demand of residents. In some overseas regions, the communities are scattered, power grid construction costs are high and subsequent upgrades are weak, and power grid coordination ability is weak. Especially under the influence of extreme weather, various large-scale power outages occur frequently, and the stability of power supply for residents is poor. And household energy storage can provide emergency power when the public grid fails or the power supply is unstable, so as to improve the power stability.

From the supply side, photovoltaic has formed a relatively mature system in technology, application and other links, and has a high permeability in some overseas developed areas. With the transformation of photovoltaic development mode from subsidy type and full online type to self-economy driven and self-use, the demand for supporting energy storage has gradually become prominent.

Under the influence of the epidemic, supply chain shortage and other factors, the global market of new household energy storage still maintained a rapid growth in 2021, with the newly installed capacity of electric energy storage projects in operation of 18.3GW, up 185% year on year. Among them, the energy storage used by households in Europe and the United States has shown an explosive growth trend with an annual doubling growth rate since 2021. In 2021, the installed energy storage capacity of the United States reached 3.51GW/10.50GWh, quadrupling year-on-year. Relevant data show that the total new installed capacity in 2021-2026 will reach 63.4GW/202.5GWh, of which 4.9GW/14.3GWh for household use.
